finch
Any of several hundred species of small, conical-billed, seed-eating songbirds (in several families), incl. the bunting, canary, cardinal, chaffinch, crossbill, Darwin's (Galá pagos) finch, goldfinch, grass finch, grosbeak, sparrow, and weaver. Finches are small, compact birds 3-10 in. (10-27 cm) long. Most use their heavy bill to crack seeds; many also eat insects. Many finches are brightly colored, often with shades of red and yellow. Found throughout the temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere and S. America and in parts of Africa, finches are among the dominant birds in many areas, both in numbers of individuals and species. They are often kept as singing cage birds.


inch
Unit of measure equal to 1/36 yard, and since 1959 defined officially as 2.54 cm (see meter). David I of Scotland (c.1150) defined the inch as the breadth of a man's thumb at the base of the nail; usually the thumb breadths of three men--one small, one medium, and one large--were added and then divided by three. During the reign of England's Edward II, the inch was defined as "three grains of barley, dry and round, placed end to end lengthwise." Minch
Sea channel between the Outer Hebrides islands and the NW coast of Scotland. It is a variable 25-45 mi (40-70 km) wide and has great depth and a rapid current. Little Minch, its S extension, lies between the island groups of the Outer and Inner Hebrides.


Pinchot
U.S. forestry and conservation pioneer. Born in Simsbury, Conn., he graduated from Yale Univ. and studied forestry in Europe. In 1892 he became the first professional U.S. forester. In 1896 he joined the national forest commission of the National Academy of Sciences and help plan the U.S. system of forest reserves (later national forests). As chief of the U.S. Forest Service (1898-1910), he established the nation's forest-service system. He founded the Yale School of Forestry and taught there 1903-36. He served as governor of Pennsylvania 1923-27 and 1931-35.


pinochle
Card game played with a 48-card pack containing special paired faces in each suit, with the object of scoring points by melding certain combinations of cards or winning tricks that contain scoring cards. The name derives from Binokel, a German game resembling bezique.


pitch
Quality of a musical tone that varies with the number of vibrations per second (hertz, Hz) of the sounding body and is perceived as highness or lowness. A higher pitch has a higher number of vibrations.
