borzoi
Breed of hound developed in Russia. It is descended from the Arabian greyhound and a collielike Russian sheepdog. Formerly known as the Russian wolfhound, it was originally bred to hunt wolves and hares. It is graceful, strong, and swift, attaining a height of about 26-31 in. (66-79 cm) and a weight of 55-105 lbs (25-48 kg). It has a long, narrow head; small ears; a deep but narrow chest; long, muscular hindquarters; and a long, curved tail. Its silky coat is flat or slightly curled and usually is white with darker markings. It is noted for its elegant appearance.
carrot
Herbaceous, generally biennial plant (Daucus carota) of the parsley family, that produces an edible globular or long taproot in the first growing season. Native to Afghanistan and neighboring lands, it is grown extensively in temperate zones. It is a rich source of carotene. An erect rosette of feathery leaves develops above ground in the first season; the edible carrot is below. After a rest period at temperatures near freezing, large flower stalks arise, bearing large compound umbels.
Correns
German botanist and geneticist. In the same year as E. Tschermak von Seysenegg and H. de Vries (1900), he independently rediscovered G. Mendel's paper outlining the principles of heredity. He conducted research with garden peas, from which he drew the same conclusions Mendel had. He helped provide the overwhelming body of evidence in support of Mendel's thesis, anticipating T. H. Morgan's development of the concept of linkage when he developed a theory of a physical coupling of genetic factors to account for the consistent inheritance of certain traits together. See also W. Darrow
U.S. lawyer and orator. Born near Kinsman, Ohio, he moved to Chicago in 1887 and immediately joined the effort to free anarchists charged with murder in the Haymarket Riot. He was appointed Chicago city corporation counsel (1890), then became general attorney for the Chicago and North Western Railway. He left the railroad to defend E. Debs in the Pullman Strike (1894), which established his reputation as a union and criminal lawyer. He represented striking Pennsylvania coal miners, drawing attention to working conditions and the use of child labor (1902-3); secured the acquittal of W. Haywood in the assassination of Gov. Frank R. Steunenberg of Idaho (1907); and sought to defend the McNamara brothers, accused of bombing the Los Angeles Times building (1911). He saved Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold from a death sentence for the murder of 14-year-old Robert Franks, and won acquittal for a black family that had fought a mob trying to expel it from its home in a white Detroit neighborhood (1925-26). Perhaps his most famous case was the Scopes trial (1925).
