bone
Rigid connective tissue of vertebrates consisting of cells embedded in a hard matrix. Bones serve as the body's supporting framework; provide muscle attachment points for movement; protect the internal organs; house the blood-cell formation system (red bone marrow); and hold about 99% of the calcium vital to many body processes. Bone consists of a matrix of calcium, phosphate, and carbonate crystals embedded among collagen fibers, providing strength and elasticity, and bone cells (less than 5% of its volume). An external layer of compact bone surrounds a central area of spongy bone, except at the marrow cavity. Bone does not grow by cell division; instead, different types of bone cells generate bone matrix, break it down, and maintain it. Bone is remodeled by this process, which strengthens it in areas under greatest stress, permits healing of fractures, and helps regulate calcium levels in body fluid (see calcium deficiency). The process also causes underutilized bone, as in an immobilized limb, to atrophy. Bone disorders include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, rickets, osteoporosis, and tumors. Bone can fracture suddenly or over time, as in stress fractures.
Boveri
German cell biologist. Working with roundworm eggs, Boveri proved that chromosomes are separate units within the nucleus of a cell. With W. Sutton, he was the first to propose that genes were located on chromosomes. Boveri proved Edouard von Beneden's theory that the ovum (egg) and sperm cell contribute equal numbers of chromosomes to the new cell created during fertilization. He later introduced the term centrosome and demonstrated that this structure is the division center for a dividing egg cell.
boxer
Smooth-haired breed of working dog named for its manner of "boxing" with its sturdy front paws when beginning to fight. Developed in Germany, it includes strains of bulldog and terrier in its heritage. Because of its reputation for courage, aggressiveness, and intelligence, it has been used in police work; it is also valued as a watchdog and companion. Trim and squarely built, it has a short, square muzzle; a black mask on its face; and a shiny, shorthaired coat of reddish brown or brindle. It stands 21-24 in. (53-61 cm) high and weighs 60-70 lbs (27-32 kg).
Boyer
French-U.S. actor. After earning a philosophy degree from the Sorbonne, he made his stage debut in Paris in 1920. He became a popular romantic leading man in French theater and film, and his rich, accented voice and suave manner made him an international star. His first successful U.S. film, Private Worlds (1935), was followed by such films as Algiers (1938), Gaslight (1944), and Stavisky (1974). He cofounded Four Star Television in 1951 and starred in many of its productions. His most notable stage appearance was in Don Juan in Hell.
