Donders
Dutch ophthalmologist. His study of "muscae volitantes" (spots before the eyes) resulted in Donders' law, stating that the rotation of the eye around the line of sight is involuntary. His research improved diagnosis, operative treatment, and use of eyeglasses for vision problems. He found that in farsightedness the eyeball is shortened, resulting in light rays being focused behind the retina (1858). His finding that astigmatism is caused by uneven cornea and lens surfaces (1862) created the field of scientific clinical refraction. His On the Anomalies of Accommodation and Refraction (1864) was the first authoritative work in the field.
Monde
(French: "The World") Daily newspaper published in Paris, one of the most important and widely respected newspapers in the world. It was established in 1944, just after the German army left the city, as an independent organ free of government or private subsidies. Covering national and world news in depth from the start, it soon earned a reputation for accuracy and independence. Its writers present their own views, with the result that the paper reveals no unified policies or consistent ideological outlook, though it is usually associated with the left.
rondeau
One of several formes fixes (fixed forms) in French lyric poetry and song of the 14th-15th cent., later popular with many English poets. The rondeau has only two rhymes (allowing no repetition of rhyme words) and consists of 13 or 15 lines of 8 or 10 syllables divided into three stanzas. The beginning of the first line of the first stanza serves as the refrain of the second and third stanzas.
Vondel
Dutch poet and dramatist. Of Mennonite parents, Vondel early showed a preference for using Christian mythology as subject matter of his plays. He also wrote lampoons and satirical poems against the Dutch church and government. His dramatic tragedies, with their lyrical language and grandeur of conception, are his most important achievement. The Passover (1612) is his most notable early work. He first modeled plays on ancient Latin drama but later turned to the Greek model for plays incl. his masterpiece, the trilogy comprising Lucifer (1654), Adam in Exile (1664), and Noah (1667), which influenced J. Milton's Paradise Lost.
