Possible definitions for zoid
acid
Any substance that in water solution tastes sour, changes the color of acid-base indicators (e.g., litmus), reacts with some metals (e.g., iron) to yield hydrogen gas, reacts with bases to form salts, and promotes certain chemical reactions (e.g., acid catalysis). Acids contain one or more hydrogen atoms that, in solution, dissociate as positively charged hydrogen ions. Inorganic, or mineral, acids include sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid. Organic acids include carboxylic acids, phenols, and sulfonic acids. Broader definitions of acids cover situations in which water is not present. See also acid-base theory.
Ahidjo
First president of Cameroon, 1960-82. He presided over one of the few successful attempts at African unity: the joining of the S half of the former British Cameroons with the larger French-speaking Cameroun. In 1982, after managing to build up a stable, relatively prosperous nation (through single-party rule), he went into exile after being implicated in a plot against his successor, Paul Biya.
Bodin
French political philosopher. He studied and later taught law at the Univ. of Toulouse (1551-61). In 1571 he entered the household of Franç ois, duc d'Alenç on, the king's brother. He favored negotiation with the Huguenots, with whom the government was engaged in a civil war, and opposed the sale of royal domains. His Six livres de la ré publique (Six Books of the Republic, 1576) won him immediate fame. In it he suggested that the key to securing order and authority lay in recognition of the state's sovereignty, whose validity he did not believe depended on its subjects. He assumed that governments commanded by divine right, and he distinguished three types: monarchy (which he favored), aristocracy, and democracy.
boil
Inflamed pus-filled swelling due to staphylococcus skin infection at a hair follicle. It hurts and feels hard; healing requires discharging the pus. Boils usually occur in hairy areas exposed to friction and maceration. A sty is a boil at the base of an eyelash. A carbuncle occurs when several adjoining boils merge. Boils may arise when scratching an existing skin disorder introduces staphylococci on the skin into hair follicles. Treatment usually involves keeping the area clean and protected from further infection; antibiotics often help severe cases.
boiler
Apparatus for converting a liquid to vapor. A boiler consists of a furnace in which fuel is burned, surfaces to transmit heat from the combustion products to the water (or other liquid), and a space where steam (or vapor) can form and collect. A conventional boiler burns a fossil fuel or waste fuel; a nuclear reactor may instead supply the heat. There are two types of conventional steam boiler. In a fire-tube boiler, the water surrounds the steel tubes through which hot gases from the furnace flow; easy to install and operate, ...
