Ailly
French theologian and cardinal. D'Ailly worked to end the Western Schism. He advocated the doctrine of conciliarism (see Conciliar Movement). He was active at the Council of Pisa (1409), which deposed both pope and antipope in favor of the new conciliar pope, Alexander V, and at the Council of Constance (1414-18), which called for the abdication of John XXIII and the election of yet another pope (Martin V). His writings included a geographical treatise, Image of the World, used by C. Columbus.


dill
Fennel-like annual or biennial herb (Anethum graveolens) of the parsley family, or its dried, ripe fruit, or seeds, and leafy tops, which are used to season foods, particularly in E Europe and Scandinavia. Native to Mediterranean countries and SE Europe, dill is now widely cultivated in Europe, India, and N. America. The entire plant is aromatic, and the small stems and immature umbels are used for flavoring food. Dill has a warm, slightly sharp flavor.


Killy
French skier. Born in Saint-Cloud, he was reared in an Alpine ski resort. He became the European champion in 1965, and in 1966 he won the world-combined championship (downhill, slalom, and giant slalom). In 1967 he won the first World Cup for men, repeating this triumph in 1968. In the 1968 Winter Olympics he became the second skier in history to sweep the Alpine events (after Austria's Toni Sailer in 1956). He retired in 1968 but returned as a professional in 1972.


Lille
City (pop., 1990: 178,000), N France, situated on the Deû le River. Fortified in the 11th cent., it changed hands several times during the Middle Ages. Louis XIV besieged and captured the city in 1667. It was taken by the duke of Marlborough in 1708 and ceded to France in 1713. It was occupied by the Germans during both World Wars. With Tourcoing and Roubaix, it now forms one of the nation's largest conurbations. It is traditionally France's textile center; other industries include machinery manufacturing and chemical plants. Its museum has a rich art collection.


sill
In geology, a tabular igneous intrusion emplaced parallel to the bedding of the enclosing rock. Although they may have inclined orientations, nearly horizontal sills are most common. Sills may range from a few inches to hundreds of feet thick and up to hundreds of miles long. They include rock compositions of all types.


Silla
Kingdom of ancient Korea that in 668 unified Korea under the Unified Silla dynasty. Traditionally believed to have been founded by Hyokkose in 57 BC, Silla emerged as a full-fledged kingdom in the 6th cent. In the reign of King Chinhung (540-76), a unique military corps, the hwarang (see hwarangdo), was organized; allied with Tang-dynasty China, it defeated the Korean state of Paekche in 660 and Koguryo in 668, then expelled the Tang forces to create a unified and independent Korean state.
