Gestapo
(German: "Secret State Police") Political police of Nazi Germany. It was created by H. Gö ring in 1933 from the political and espionage units of the Prussian police and by H. Himmler from the police of the remaining German states. Himmler was given command in 1934. The Gestapo operated without civil restraints, and its actions were not subject to judicial appeal. Thousands of Jews, leftists, intellectuals, trade unionists, political clergy, and homosexuals disappeared into concentration camps after being arrested by the Gestapo. In World War II the Gestapo suppressed partisan activities in the occupied territories, and a section of the Gestapo under A. Eichmann organized the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps in Poland.


Hestia
Greek goddess of the hearth and one of the 12 chief deities of Mt. Olympus. She was the daughter of Rhea and Cronus. When Apollo and Poseidon became suitors for her hand, she swore to remain a maiden forever, whereupon Zeus gave her the honor of presiding over all sacrifices. Though mainly a goddess of the family hearth and domestic life, she was sometimes also worshiped at the civic hearth in public buildings.


Kesey
U.S. writer. Born in La Junta, Col., he attended Stanford Univ. and later served as an experimental subject and aide in a hospital, an experience that led to his novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962; film, 1975), which would become one of the most widely read countercultural texts of the 1960s. It was followed by Sometimes a Great Notion (1964). His entourage, the Merry Pranksters, toured the U.S. in a brightly painted bus from the 1960s, and were the subject of T. Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968).


kestrel
Any of several birds of prey (genus Falco) known for hovering while hunting. Kestrels prey on large insects, birds, and small mammals. The male is more colorful than the female. Kestrels are mainly Old World birds, but one species, the Amer. kestrel (F. sparverius), often called sparrow hawk in the U.S., is common throughout N. and S. America. It is about 12 in. (30 cm) long, white or yellowish below, and reddish brown and slate- gray above with colorful markings on the head. The common kestrel (F. tinnunculus) of the Old World is larger and less colorful. leshy
In Slavic mythology, a forest spirit. The leshy is an antic spirit who enjoys playing tricks on people, though when angered he can be treacherous. He is seldom seen, but his voice can be heard in the forest laughing, whistling, or singing. He often takes the shape of a man, but his eyebrows, eyelashes, and right ear are missing, his head is pointed, and he lacks a hat and belt. In his native forest, the leshy is as tall as the trees, but the moment he steps beyond it, he shrinks to the size of grass. The leshy is familiar to most Slavs living in heavily forested areas.
