Verres
Roman magistrate notorious for corruption. As quaestor, he embezzled funds. In Cilicia in Asia Minor, he helped the governor, Gaius Dolabella, plunder the province (80-78), then helped convict Dolabella at Rome. He became praetor by bribery, and abused his power. As governor of Sicily (73-71) his corruption was extreme; he was prosecuted so effectively by Cicero (70) that his lawyer had no reply. He fled into exile but was murdered, perhaps at the orders of Mark Antony, who then acquired his art collection.

Largest known asteroid in the solar system and the first discovered, in 1801. Named after the goddess Ceres, it revolves around the sun in 4.6 terrestrial years and is about 580 mi (930 km) across.

ferret
Either of two species in the carnivore family Mustelidae. The common ferret (Mustela putorius furo) is a domesticated form of the European polecat. It has a long, lithe body and is brown, black, or white (albino). Its average length is 20 in. (51 cm), incl. the 5-in. (13-cm) tail, and it weighs about 2 lbs (1 kg). It was originally domesticated for hunting mice, rats, and rabbits; today ferrets are commonly kept as pets. The black-footed ferret (M. nigripes), of the N. Amer. plains, has a black mask across the eyes and brownish black markings on the feet and tail tip. It is an endangered species, owing to the loss of its main source of food, the prairie dog.


Hermes
Greek god, son of Zeus and Maia. The earliest center of his cult was probably Arcadia, where he was worshiped as a god of fertility. He was also associated with the protection of cattle and sheep. In Homer's Odyssey he appears as the messenger of the gods and the conductor of the dead to Hades. As a messenger he also became the god of roads and doorways and the protector of travelers. He was also the god of dreams. His Roman counterpart was Mercury.
