Beria
Soviet politician and director of the Soviet secret police. He worked in intelligence and counterintelligence activities from 1921. As Communist Party head of the Transcaucasian republics (1932-38), he personally oversaw the political purges initiated by J. Stalin (see Purge Trials). He was head of the Soviet secret police 1938-53, and after Stalin's death he became one of four deputy prime ministers and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After attempting to succeed Stalin as sole dictator, he was arrested and executed.


Berlage
Dutch architect. After studies in Zurich, he began his practice in Amsterdam (1889). His best-known work is the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (1897-1903), notable for its forthright use of structural steel and traditional Dutch brickwork. While visiting the U.S. (1911), he was exposed to the work of L. Sullivan and F. L. Wright, and later introduced their methods and ideas to Europe. His work was characterized by the honest use of materials based on their fundamental properties and the avoidance of meaningless ornamentation.


Bernard
French physiologist. He taught at several major French institutions, and was named a senator in 1869. He discovered the role of the pancreas in digestion, the glycogenic function of the liver in carbohydrate metabolism, and blood-supply regulation by the vasomotor nerves. He helped establish the principles of experimentation in the life sciences, incl. the need for a hypothesis to be confirmed or refuted. His concept of the internal environment of the organism led to the present understanding of homeostasis. Bernard also studied the effects of such poisons as carbon monoxide and curare. He was awarded the grand prize in physiology three times by the Acadé mie des Sciences.


Berra
U.S. baseball player, manager, and coach. Born in St. Louis, he joined the New York Yankees in 1946 and served as the team's regular catcher from 1949 until his retirement in 1963. He was named the Amer. League's Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1954, and 1955. He caught in more World Series games (75) than any other catcher, and hit 20 or more home runs a season through 1958. He managed the Yankees in 1964, but was fired and became a coach and manager (1965-75) with the New York Mets. He returned to the Yankees as a coach (1976-82) and later manager (1983-85). He was known for idiosyncratic remarks such as "It ain't over till it's over," and the cartoon character Yogi Bear was named for him.


Breda
Document issued by the exiled King Charles II in Breda, the Netherlands, making certain promises in return for his restoration to the English throne. It expressed his desire for a general amnesty, liberty of conscience, an equitable settlement of land disputes, and full payment of arrears to the army. He left the specifics to the Convention Parliament. See also Restoration.
