Ards
District (pop., 1995 est.: 67,000), Northern Ireland. Formerly part of Co. Downs, Ards was established as a district in 1973. Much of its land is devoted to crops and pasture. Newtownards, settled c.1608 by Scots, is its administrative seat and manufacturing center. Donaghadee is a popular resort town.


Ares
Greek god of war. Unlike his Roman counterpart, Mars, his worship was not extensive. From the time of Homer, he was one of the Olympian deities, the son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by the other gods. His worship occurred largely in N Greece. He was associated from early times with Aphrodite, occasionally portrayed as his legitimate wife and at other times his lover. He was accompanied in battle by his sister Eris (strife) and by two of his children by Aphrodite, Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Rout).


Caruso
Italian tenor. Born in Naples and apprenticed to a mechanical engineer at 10, at 18 he began to sing in public in his free time. He attracted the notice of a teacher, and made his professional debut in 1894. He sang his best-known role, Canio in R. Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, for the first time in 1896. He recovered from a disastrous La Scala debut in 1900 and within two years had gained the high notes that made him an international star and a legend. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera 1903-20 in almost 60 roles, becoming the most famous male opera star of his time. His warm, appealing tenor voice of great emotive power made his recordings (which include some of the first vocal recordings ever made) best-sellers for decades after his death at 48.


Darfur
Historical region and former province, W Sudan. It was an independent kingdom from c.2500 BC. Its first traditional rulers, the Daju, probably traded with ancient Egypt; they were succeeded by the Tunjur. Darfur's Christian period, which lasted c.900-1200, was ended by the advance of Islam with the empire of Kanem-Bornu. In the 1870s Darfur came under Egyptian rule, and in 1916 it became a province of Sudan.

In Roman religion, guardian deities. Originally gods of cultivated fields, Lares were later worshiped in association with the Penates, the gods of the household.
