Camargo
French ballerina noted for her technical innovations. She made her Paris Opera debut in 1726, going on to dance in 78 ballets and operas before her retirement in 1751. Admired for her speed and agility, she executed jumping steps previously performed only by male dancers, shortening her skirts and removing the heels from her slippers to do so. Her name was adopted in 1930 by a British ballet group, the Camargo Society.
Navarro
U.S. jazz trumpeter, one of the primary exponents of bebop. Born in Key West, Fla., Navarro replaced D. Gillespie in the big band of B. Eckstine in 1946, acquiring a reputation as a virtuoso player capable of executing complex phrases with rare grace. He participated in the burgeoning jazz milieu based around 52nd St. in New York in the late 1940s, working with such bebop innovators as B. Powell, C. Parker, and Tadd Dameron. Addiction to heroin curtailed his activity, and he died of tuberculosis at age 26.
