jackal
Any of three canine species of the genus Canis. They inhabit open country and live alone, in pairs, or in packs. They hunt at night, feeding on small animals, plant material, or carrion. A pack can bring down larger prey. The golden, or Asiatic, jackal (yellowish) is found from E Europe and NE Africa to SE Asia. The black-backed jackal (rusty red with a black back) and side-striped jackal (grayish with a white-tipped tail and an indistinct stripe on each side) are found in S and E Africa. Jackals are 34-37 in. (85-95 cm) long, incl. the 12-14-in. (30-35-cm) tail, and weigh 15-24 lbs (7-11 kg).
Lachaise
French-born U.S. sculptor. Son of a cabinetmaker, he was trained in the decorative arts and studied sculpture at the \u00c9 cole des Beaux-Arts (1898-1904). He was a designer of Art Nouveau decorative objects for R. Lalique before emigrating to the U.S. in 1906. His most famous work, Standing Woman (1912-27), a female nude with enormous breasts and thighs and sinuous, tapered limbs, typifies the image he worked and reworked throughout his career. He is also known for his portrait busts of J. Marin, M. Moore, E. E. Cummings, and others.

Floating mass of ice formed from seawater in polar regions. Pack ice expands during winter to cover about 5% of the N oceans and 8% of the S oceans. When melting occurs in spring and summer, the margins of the pack ice retreat. The pack ice of the Northern Hemisphere covers an average area of about 4 million sq mi (10 million sq km), filling the Arctic Ocean basin and adjacent N. Atlantic Ocean. About twice as much pack ice forms in the oceans surrounding Antarctica as in the Arctic. The maximum area of Antarctic pack ice is about 7.5 million sq mi (20 million sq km).
