Aachen
City (pop., 1995 est.: 247,000), W Germany, southwest of Cologne. It was inhabited by Romans in the 1st cent. AD. A center of Carolingian culture, and the second city of Charlemagne's empire, it was the site of his great palace. The cathedral built by Charlemagne c.800 saw the coronation of most German kings of the 10th-16th cent.; his chapel, with his tomb, remains as part of the larger Gothic cathedral today. Aachen was part of France 1801-15. It is famous for its many spas.


Hamhung
City (pop., 1987 est.: 701,000), E central N. Korea. It was the commercial and administrative center of NE Korea during the Choson dynasty (1392-1910) and developed as a modern industrial city in the 1920s. During the Korean War, most industrial plants in the area were destroyed by U.S. bombing raids, but they were rebuilt. In addition to its manufacturing importance, it is the site of several institutions of learning.


Kachin
Tribal peoples occupying parts of NE Myanmar and contiguous areas of India (Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland) and China (Yunnan). Numbering over 700,000, they speak a variety of languages of the Tibeto-Burman group. Traditional Kachin society largely subsisted on the shifting cultivation of hill rice, supplemented by the proceeds of banditry and feudal warfare. The traditional Kachin religion is a form of animistic ancestor cult entailing animal sacrifice. About 10% of the Kachin are Christian.


kachina
Ancestral spirit of the Pueblo Indians. There are more than 500 of these spirits, who act as intermediaries between humans and the gods. Each tribe has its own kachinas, which are believed to reside with a tribe for half of each year. They can be seen by the community if men properly perform a ritual while wearing kachina masks. The spirit depicted on the mask is thought to be actually present with the performer, temporarily transforming him. Kachinas are also represented by small wooden dolls, carved and decorated by the men of the tribe.
