Dulany
Amer. lawyer. Born in Annapolis, Md., he became a leading lawyer in the colonies and a member of the Maryland governor's council (1757-76). In 1765 he wrote an influential pamphlet criticizing the Stamp Act, but he opposed revolt against British rule and remained a Loyalist during the Amer. Revolution.


Fulani
Primarily Muslim people, numbering about 18 million, found in many parts of W Africa, from Lake Chad west to the Atlantic coast. Their language is Fula (of the Atlantic languages of the Niger-Congo family). Originally they were herders, but interaction with other groups produced marked cultural changes. In the 1790s the Fulani priest Usman dan Fodio led a holy war (jihad) that created a large empire. Its decay in the 19th cent. aided the establishment of British rule over N Nigeria. Many Fulani of N Nigeria have adopted the Hausa language and culture and established themselves as an urban aristocracy.


Yuman
Any of various Native Amer. groups who traditionally lived in the lower Colorado River valley and adjacent areas in Arizona, California, and Mexico and who spoke related languages of Hokan stock. The river Yuman (incl. the Mojave, Yuma, and Maricopa) lived along the lower Colorado and middle Gila rivers; the upland Yuman (incl. the Hualapai and Havasupai) inhabited W Arizona south of the Grand Canyon. The river Yuman were primarily farmers; the upland Yuman also practiced hunting and gathering. Both lacked settled villages. Yuman religion is characterized by belief in a supreme creator, faith in dreams, and ritual use of song narratives. Today the Yuman number over 4,000.


Buganda
Former kingdom, E. Africa. Located along the N shore of Lake Victoria in present-day Uganda, the area, by the 19th cent., was inhabited by the Ganda people and Buganda had come under the Ganda ruler. In 1900 it became a British protectorate. The Ganda subsequently played a major role in assisting British administration in E. Africa. When Uganda became independent in 1962, Buganda was accorded special federal status within the state. Ensuing tensions with the central government led in 1967 to the kingdom's abolition and the area's integration into Uganda.


Celan
Romanian poet who wrote in German. When Romania came under Nazi control during World War II, Celan, a Jew, was sent to a forced-labor camp; his parents were murdered. He moved to Vienna in 1947 and published his first volume of poetry, The Sand from the Urns, in 1948. His second volume, Poppy and Memory (1952), established his reputation in W. Germany. He produced seven more volumes before taking his own life by drowning in the Seine. His dense and complex verse is marked by his experience of World War II; his early poem "Todesfuge" is probably the most famous poetic expression of the Holocaust.
