buckeye
Any of about 13 trees and shrubs of the genus Aesculus (family Hippocastanaceae), native to N. America, SE Europe, and E Asia. The name refers to the resemblance of the nut, which has a pale patch on a shiny red ground, to the eye of a deer. Buckeyes are valued as ornamental trees for their handsome candelabra-like flower clusters. Both the young foliage and the nuts are poisonous. Among the most notable is the Ohio buckeye (A. glabra), also called fetid buckeye and Amer. horse chestnut, with twigs and leaves that yield an unpleasant odor when crushed. The sweet, or yellow, buckeye (A. flava, or A. octandra) is the largest buckeye, up to 89 ft (27 m) tall, and is naturally abundant in Great Smoky Mtns. National Park.
Eucken
German philosopher. He taught primarily at the Univ. of Jena (1874-1920). Eucken maintained that it is a human duty and privilege to overcome nature by incessant active striving after the spiritual life. A strident critic of naturalism, he held that the human soul differentiated humans from the rest of the natural world and that the soul could not be explained by natural processes. He was known as an interpreter of Aristotle, and he wrote works in ethics and religion, incl. Socialism (1920) and Individual and Society (1923). He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1908.
sucker
Any of 80-100 species (family Catostomidae) of freshwater food fishes found mostly in N. America. Suckers can be distinguished from minnows by the sucking mouth, with protrusible lips, on the underside of the head. Generally sluggish, they suck up detritus, invertebrates, and plants from the bottom of lakes and slow streams. The species vary greatly in size. The lake chubsucker (Erimyzon sucetta) grows to 10 in. (25 cm) long; the bigmouth buffalo fish (Ictiobus cyprinellus) grows to 35 in. (90 cm) and over 70 lbs (32 kg).
