Advent
In the Christian calendar, the first season of the church year, a period of preparation for the birth of Jesus. Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30 and continues until Christmas. Viewed as a penitential season, it is also considered a time of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. The origin of Advent is unknown, but it was observed as early as the 6th cent. In many countries it is celebrated with popular customs such as the lighting of Advent candles.


Boveri
German cell biologist. Working with roundworm eggs, Boveri proved that chromosomes are separate units within the nucleus of a cell. With W. Sutton, he was the first to propose that genes were located on chromosomes. Boveri proved Edouard von Beneden's theory that the ovum (egg) and sperm cell contribute equal numbers of chromosomes to the new cell created during fertilization. He later introduced the term centrosome and demonstrated that this structure is the division center for a dividing egg cell.


Bowen
British (Irish-born) novelist and short-story writer. Among her novels are The House in Paris (1935), The Death of the Heart (1938), and The Heat of the Day (1949). Her short-story collections include The Demon Lover (1945). Her finely wrought prose style frequently details uneasy and unfulfilling relationships among the upper middle class. Her essays appear in Collected Impressions (1950) and Afterthought (1962).


cohen
(Hebrew: "priest") Jewish priest descended from Zadok (a descendant of Aaron), priest at the First Temple of Jerusalem. The biblical priesthood was hereditary and male. Before King Josiah's reign (7th cent. BC), the high priest alone could enter the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur. Lower-ranking priests accompanied the army in war or administered the Temple. The priestly class was strongest during the period of the Second Temple and was curtailed after its destruction. The rabbinate has replaced the kohanim as authorities on the Law, but kohanim retain some privileges (except in Reform Judaism).


coving
Concave molding or deeply arched section of a wall surface. The curve typically describes a quarter-circle and serves to connect walls and ceiling (cove ceiling). The arched sections may be used to conceal light fixtures for dramatic effect, hence the term cove lighting. Coving can also refer to the curved soffit connecting the top of an exterior wall to a projecting eave.


Dogen
Japanese Buddhist who introduced Soto Zen to Japan from China. Orphaned at 7, he became a monk at 13. He studied in China under the Zen master Rujing 1223-27, and also studied with Eisai. He returned to Japan and taught Zen meditation, spending his last years at Eihei Temple, which he founded.
