Bouts
Netherlandish painter. Born in Haarlem, he was active in Louvain, where he was influenced by R. van der Weyden. His best-known works are a triptych altarpiece (1464) for the church of St. Peter in Louvain, its panels representing the Last Supper and four Old Testament scenes, and two huge panels representing a scene of secular justice (1470-75) for the city hall, intended as examples of justice for the Louvain town council. His treatment of his figures ranges from strong emotion expressed through symbolic gesture to great severity and restraint.


Irkutsk
City (pop., 1995 est.: 585,000), E central Russia. Located on the Angara River, it was founded as a wintering camp in 1652. It soon became a commercial center for the fur trade and a base on the Russian trade route to China and Mongolia. Its importance grew after the opening of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in 1898. It is now an industrial and cultural center for Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East. It is the seat of Irkutsk State Univ. and the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences.


Yakut
Siberian people who speak a Turkic language. Most were formerly seminomadic, raising cattle and horses. They lived in winter settlements of earth-covered log huts and summer camps of conical birch-bark tents near pasturage and sources of hay for winter fodder. Through assimilation, many S Yakut turned to farming while N Yakut adopted reindeer breeding from the Evenki. The Yakut were noted for their ironwork (supernatural power was attributed to blacksmiths) and also made pottery; traditional arts such as ivory and wood carving are still practiced. Filmmaking has become popular more recently. The Yakut number about 380,000. See also Siberian peoples.
