boil
Inflamed pus-filled swelling due to staphylococcus skin infection at a hair follicle. It hurts and feels hard; healing requires discharging the pus. Boils usually occur in hairy areas exposed to friction and maceration. A sty is a boil at the base of an eyelash. A carbuncle occurs when several adjoining boils merge. Boils may arise when scratching an existing skin disorder introduces staphylococci on the skin into hair follicles. Treatment usually involves keeping the area clean and protected from further infection; antibiotics often help severe cases.


Foix
Historical region, S France. Corresponding approximately to the modern department of Ariè ge, it was a quasi-independent power in the 11th-15th cent. Bounded by Languedoc, and by the territories of the counts of Roussillon and the kings of Aragon, it became part of the crown lands at the ascension of Henry IV as king of France (1589).


Moi
Five-term president of Kenya (from 1978). Trained as a teacher, Moi served in the cabinet and as vice president (1967-78) under Pres. J. Kenyatta before succeeding him as president. Head of the dominant Kenyan African National Union (KANU) party, he governed autocratically, finally permitting multiparty elections only when forced to by international pressure in 1991. His subsequent electoral victories (1992, 1998) led to civil unrest and charges of stealing the elections. During his time in office some sectors of the economy have grown, but critics have attributed this to the strong political patronage system.


soil
Earthen material that covers land surfaces and is formed by the action of natural physical, chemical, and biological forces on the unconsolidated residue of rocks and minerals on the earth's surface. The most important constituents of soil are crystalline clay and organic matter. Soil is produced primarily by weathering and leaching. Environmental factors such as rainfall, topography, and vegetation influence soil formation and properties, as do the activities of some animals, so that very different soils may be formed from the same parent material.


Yoga
One of the six orthodox systems (darshans) of Indian philosophy, which has had widespread influence on many schools of Indian thought. It is better known through its practical aspect than its intellectual content, which is largely based on the philosophy of Sankhya. Holding that the evolution of the world occurred in stages, Yoga attempts to reverse this order so that a person reenters his or her state of purity and consciousness. Generally, the Yoga process involves eight stages, which may require several lifetimes to pass through. The first two stages are ethical preparations emphasizing morality, cleanliness, and devotion to God.
