colic
Any sudden, violent pain, especially that produced by contraction of the muscular walls of a hollow organ whose opening is partly or completely blocked. In infants, intestinal colic is characterized by drawing up of the legs, restlessness, and constant crying. Colic may accompany enteritis (intestinal inflammation) or an intestinal tumor, as well as certain forms of influenza. Colic caused by spastic bowel contractions is common in lead poisoning. Treatment, aimed at symptom relief, often includes use of a muscle relaxant.
magic
Use of means (such as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces. It constitutes the core of many religious systems and plays a central social role in many nonliterate cultures. Magic is often distinguished from religion as being more impersonal and mechanical and emphasizing technique. Its techniques are usually regarded as means to specific ends (an enemy's defeat, rainfall, etc.), although another view ascribes a more symbolic, expressive character to such activity. Thus, a rainmaking ritual may both elicit rainfall and stress the symbolic importance of rain and the agricultural activities associated with it. Both the magician and the magical rite are typically surrounded by taboos, purification procedures, and other activities that draw the participants into the magical sphere. Strains of magic in Western tradition, formerly associated with heretics, alchemists, witches, and sorcerers, persist in modern times in the activities of satanists and others. The art of entertaining by performing apparently magical feats (sometimes called conjuring) relies on the use of slight of hand and other means. Noguchi
U.S. sculptor and designer. Though born in Los Angeles, he spent his early years in Japan. After premedical studies at Columbia Univ., he became C. Brancusi's assistant in Paris. He was influenced as well by A. Giacometti, A. Calder, P. Picasso, and J. Miró . His premedical training suggested to him the interrelatedness of bone and stone, as seen in Kouros (1945). Much of his work, such as Bird C(MU) (1953-58), consists of elegantly abstracted, rounded forms in highly polished stone. His long collaboration with M. Graham resulted in stage sets for many ballets, and he also designed many public sculptures, sculptural gardens, and playgrounds, as well as furniture.
Noricum
Ancient kingdom and Roman province, W central Europe. It was located roughly south of the Danube River and north of modern Italy. Originally controlled by a Celtic confederacy, it was annexed by Augustus c.15 BC. It had rich iron and gold mines worked by the Romans. Latin inscriptions on coins indicate a Romanized culture.
