Agee
U.S. poet and novelist. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., he attended Harvard Univ. In the 1930s and '40s, his film reviews in Time and the Nation made him a pioneer in serious film criticism. His lyrical Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), with photographs by W. Evans, documents the daily lives of poverty-stricken Alabama sharecroppers. After 1948 Agee worked mainly as a screenwriter, notably on The African Queen (1951) and The Night of the Hunter (1955). He is best known for his autobiographical novel A Death in the Family (1957, Pulitzer Prize).
doge
(Venetian Italian: "duke") Highest official of the republic of Venice in the 8th-18th cent. The office originated when the city was nominally subject to the Byzantine empire and became permanent in the 8th cent. The doge was chosen from among the ruling families of Venice and held office for life. He held extensive power, as evidenced by the rule of E. Dandolo (r.1192-1205), though from the 12th cent. the aristocracy placed limits on the doge's authority. Under Francesco Foscari (r.1423-57), Venice undertook the first conquests of the Italian mainland. The last doge was deposed when Napoleon conquered N Italy in 1797.
Dogen
Japanese Buddhist who introduced Soto Zen to Japan from China. Orphaned at 7, he became a monk at 13. He studied in China under the Zen master Rujing 1223-27, and also studied with Eisai. He returned to Japan and taught Zen meditation, spending his last years at Eihei Temple, which he founded.

Count of Sicily (1072-1101). A Norman knight, he went to Italy (1057) to help his brother Robert Guiscard take Calabria from the Byzantines (1060). They launched a campaign to conquer Sicily from the Muslims (1061), and when they captured Palermo (1072), Roger was granted a limited right to govern Sicily and Calabria. After Robert's death he gained full right to govern and created an efficient centralized government.
Roget
English physician and philologist. In 1814 he invented a slide rule for calculating the roots and powers of numbers. He was instrumental in founding the Univ. of London (1828). He is best known for his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (1852), a comprehensive classification of synonyms or verbal equivalents which he assembled during his retirement. He was a fellow (from 1815) and secretary (from 1827) of the Royal Society.
Yoga
One of the six orthodox systems (darshans) of Indian philosophy, which has had widespread influence on many schools of Indian thought.
