Fezzan
Historic region, SW Libya. A part of the Sahara desert, most of its nearly 200,000 inhabitants dwell in oases in the center. S Fezzan is noted for its date palms, which cover several hundred thousand acres scattered in numerous oases. It was conquered by the Romans in the 1st cent. BC and by the Arabs in the 7th cent. AD. The Turks made it part of the Ottoman empire in 1842. Fezzan was made part of Tripoli by the Italians in 1912, and it became a province of the United Kingdom of Libya (1951-63).


Yezhov
Soviet secret-police chief. By 1927 he was a functionary for the Moscow party's central committee and a favorite of J. Stalin. He became a member of the party's Central Committee (1934) and succeeded G. Yagoda as chief of the Soviet security police, or NKVD (1936). He instituted the most severe stage of the Great Purge (see Purge Trials), known as Yezhovshchina. By 1938 he had become the object of Stalin's suspicions and was replaced by L. Beria as head of the NKVD. He disappeared in 1939 and was probably executed.
