metaphor
Figure of speech in which a word or phrase denoting one kind of object or action is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in "the ship plows the seas" or "a volley of oaths"). A metaphor is an implied comparison (as in "a marble brow"), in contrast to the explicit comparison of the simile ("a brow white as marble"). Metaphor is common at all levels of language and is fundamental in poetry, in which its varied functions range from merely noting a likeness to serving as a central concept and controlling image.

Metaxas
Greek general and premier (1936-41). He rose in the Greek army to become chief of staff (1913-17). An ardent monarchist, he left Greece when King Constantine I was deposed in 1917, but returned in 1920. After the monarchy's fall in 1923, he led an opposition ultraroyalist party until the monarchy was restored in 1935. He was appointed premier in 1936 and, with royal authority, established a dictatorship. He suppressed political opposition, carried out some beneficial economic and social reforms, and brought a united country into the Western alliance in World War II.

Petipa
French-Russian dancer and choreographer who greatly influenced modern classical Russian ballet. Born in Marseilles, he received his early training from his ballet-master father and was a principal dancer in France, Belgium, and Spain before joining the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg in 1847. There he also created several ballets, including The Pharaoh's Daughter, which led to his appointment as chief choreographer in 1869. By his retirement in 1903, he had produced over 60 ballets for the imperial theaters in St. Petersburg and Moscow--including Don Quixote (1869), La Camargo (1872), Sleeping Beauty (1890), Swan Lake (1895), and The Seasons (1900)--which formed the core of the classical Russian repertoire.
