Deism
Belief in God based on reason rather than revelation or the teaching of any specific religion. A form of natural religion, Deism originated in England in the early 17th cent. as a rejection of orthodox Christianity. Deists asserted that reason could find evidence of God in nature and that God had created the world and then left it to operate under the natural laws he had devised. The philosopher Edward Herbert (1583-1648) developed this view in On Truth (1624). By the late 18th cent. Deism was the dominant religious attitude among Europe's educated classes; it was accepted by many upper-class Americans of the same era, incl. the first three U.S. presidents.
Geisel
U.S. writer and illustrator. Born in Springfield, Mass., he studied at Dartmouth College and did doctoral work at Oxford. He began working in 1927 as a freelance cartoonist, illustrator, and writer. Under his pseudonym, Geisel began creating immensely popular children's books peopled with outlandish invented creatures and brimming with nonsense words. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1937), his first Dr. Seuss book, was followed by such huge successes as Horton Hatches the Egg (1940), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1957), Yertle the Turtle (1958), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). Such perennial best-sellers, and his posthumous Oh, the Places You'll Go! (1993), have made him the best-selling children's author in the world.
geisha
Member of a professional class of women in Japan whose traditional occupation is to entertain men. A geisha must be adept at singing, dancing, and playing the samisen in addition to being skilled at making conversation. The geisha system is thought to have emerged in the 17th cent. to provide a class of well-trained entertainers set apart from courtesans and prostitutes: though geisha sometimes had sexual relationships with their clients, they were supposed to entertain primarily through their accomplishments. The numbers of geisha have declined from some 80,000 in the 1920s to a few thousand at present, almost all confined to Tokyo and Kyoto, where they are patronized by only the wealthiest businessmen and most influential politicians. Ordinary businessmen seek out bar hostesses, who, though not trained in traditional singing or dance, like geisha excel at supportive conversation.
Leisler
German-Amer. insurrectionist. He emigrated to New York in 1660 and became a wealthy merchant. Objecting to the British unification of New York and New England (1685-89), he led the revolt called Leisler's Rebellion, established himself as lieutenant governor of the province (1689-91), and called the first intercolonial congress (1690) to plan action against the French and Indians. When he reluctantly surrendered to a new British governor, he was charged with treason and hanged.
