Kearny
U.S. Army officer. Born in Newark, N.J., he served in the War of 1812 and later on the W frontier. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was ordered to seize New Mexico and California. Using diplomacy to persuade Mexican troops to withdraw, he marched unopposed to Santa Fe, where in 1846 he proclaimed a civil government for the province. He left for California, where R. Stockton and J. Fré mont had already assumed command. Their forces combined to defeat Mexican rebels in 1847 and, after initial opposition by Fré mont, established a stable government. Sent to Mexico, Kearney died of yellow fever.


yarn
Continuous strand of fibers grouped or twisted together and used to construct textile fabrics. Yarns are made from both natural and synthetic fibers, in filament or staple form. Filament is very long fiber, incl. the natural fiber silk and the synthetic fibers. Most fibers that occur in nature are fairly short, or staple, and synthetic fibers may be cut into short, uniform lengths to form staple. Spinning is the process of drawing out and twisting a mass of cleaned, prepared fibers. Filament yarns generally require less twist than do staple yarns. More twist produces stronger yarn; low twist produces softer, shinier yarn. Two or more single strands may be twisted together to form ply yarn. Knitting yarns have less twist than weaving yarns. Thread, used for sewing, is a tightly twisted ply yarn.

In machine construction, a connector (usually a support) that permits the connected members to rotate or to move in a straight line relative to one another. To minimize friction, the contacting surfaces in a bearing may be separated by a film of oil or gas; these are sliding bearings (see oil seal). In ball bearings and roller bearings, the surfaces are separated by balls or rollers.
