Alps
Mountain system, S central Europe. The Alps extend in a crescent about 750 mi (1,200 km) from the Mediterranean coast between France and Italy to Vienna, and cover more than 80,000 sq mi (207,000 sq km). Several peaks rise above 10,000 ft (3,000 m); the highest is Mont Blanc. The Alps form a divide between the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, and give rise to several major European rivers, incl. the Rhô ne, Danube, and Po. Glaciers cover about 1,500 sq mi (3,900 sq km), mostly at elevations above 10,000 ft (3,000 m). The St. Gotthard Pass is one of the Alps' notable tunnels. Grenoble, Innsbruck, and Bolzano are major alpine cities.
dauphin
Title of the eldest son of a king of France, the heir apparent to the French crown, from 1350 to 1830. The title was established through the purchase of lands known as the Dauphiné in 1349 by the future Charles V.
Gauss
German mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. Born to poor parents, he was a prodigy of astounding depth. By his early teens he had already performed astonishing proofs who also distinguished himself in ancient languages. He published over 150 works and made such important contributions as the fundamental theorem of algebra (in his doctoral dissertation), the least squares method, Gauss-Jordan elimination (for solving matrix equations), and the bell curve (or Gaussian error curve (see normal distribution). After he died, many important papers were found that he had not published because they did not meet his high standards. His development of non-Euclidean geometry went unnoticed for decades. Gauss also made important contributions to physics and astronomy and pioneered the application of mathematics to gravitation, electricity, and magnetism. He also developed the fields of potential theory and real analysis. With Archimedes and Newton, he is one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.
Kautsky
German Marxist theorist and leader. He was the author of the Erfurt Program adopted by Germany's Social Democrat Party in 1891, which committed the party to an evolutionary form of Marxism that rejected both the radicalism of R. Luxemburg and the evolutionary socialism of E. Bernstein. He founded the Marxist review Neue Zeit in 1883, which he edited in various European cities until 1917, and wrote several books about Marx's doctrines and about T. More. He joined the Independent Social Democrats in opposing World War I.
Mauss
French sociologist and anthropologist. Mauss was the nephew of É . Durkheim, who contributed much to his intellectual formation and with whom he collaborated in such important works as Suicide (1897) and Primitive Classification (1901-2). His most influential independent work was The Gift (1925), a highly original comparative study of the relation between forms of gift exchange and social structure.
