Possible definitions for yaud

Baudot
French engineer. In 1874 he patented a telegraph code that by the mid-20th cent. had supplanted Morse code as the standard telegraphic alphabet. In Baudot's code, each letter is represented by a five-unit combination of current-on or current-off signals of equal duration, providing 32 permutations (sufficient for the Roman alphabet, punctuation, and control of the machine's mechanical functions). Baudot also invented (1894) a distributor system for multiplex (simultaneous) transmission of several messages on the same telegraphic circuit or channel. The baud, a unit of data transmission speed, is named for him.

Saud
King of Saudi Arabia (1953-64). Son and successor of Ibn Saud, he continued his father's program of modernization, emphasizing the construction of medical and educational facilities. His financial mismanagement led to increasing opposition. He was deposed in favor of his brother, Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz (1905-1975), who proved far more financially competent.

yard
Unit of length, equal to 36 inches or 3 ft (see foot) in the U.S. system, or to 0.9144 m (see meter) in the International System of Units. A cloth yard, used to measure cloth, was 37 in. long. (A cloth yard was also the standard length for arrows.) In casual speech, a yard (e.g., of concrete, gravel or topsoil) may refer to a cubic yard.

auk
In general, any of 22 species of diving birds (family Alcidae), especially the little auk and the razorbill, or razor-billed auk. Auks are 6-16 in. (15-40 cm) long, with short wings and legs and webbed feet. They occur only in Arctic, subarctic, and temperate regions (with a few species south to Baja California). Auks nest colonially on cliff ledges or in rock crevices or burrows near the sea; many spend the winter far from land. They feed on fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and plankton. True auks are black and white and stand erect on land. See also great auk.

Balder
In Norse mythology, the just and beautiful son of Odin and Frigga. He could be harmed by nothing except mistletoe. Knowing he was invulnerable, the gods amused themselves by throwing things at him. Deceived by Loki, the blind god Hö d hurled mistletoe at Balder and killed him. The giantess Thö kk, probably Loki in disguise, refused to weep the tears that would have released Balder from the underworld.

band
Type of human social organization consisting of a small number of nuclear families or related subgroups who are loosely organized for purposes of subsistence or security. Bands may be integrated into a larger community or tribe. They generally exist in sparsely populated areas and possess relatively simple technologies; their habitats range from the Australian desert (Aborigines) to the African rain forest (Mbuti, Aka) to the N tundra (Kaska Indians). Bands may occasionally coalesce for broader community ceremonies, hunting, or warfare. See also hunting and ...
