Akita
Breed of working dog that originated in the mountains of N Japan. In 1931 the Japanese government designated the breed as a national treasure. It is a powerful, muscular dog with a broad head, erect pointed ears, and a large curved tail carried over the back or curled against the flank. Colors and markings vary, incl. all-white, brindle, and pinto. All but the white akitas bear a distinct mask (dark area around the muzzle). Males stand 26-28 in. (66-71 cm) high, females 24-26 in. (60-66 cm).


Fatima
Daughter of Muhammad and the object of veneration in Shiite Islam. In 622 she emigrated with her father from Mecca to Medina, where she married her cousin Ali. Their sons Hasan and al-Husayn ibn Ali are considered by Shiites the rightful inheritors of the tradition of Muhammad. Fatima's marriage was unhappy, but she and her husband were reconciled by the Prophet, and she cared for her father in his last illness (632). She clashed with his successor, Abu Bakr, over property and died a year later. Later tradition added to the majesty of her life, and the Fatimid dynasty derived its name from hers.


Habima
(Hebrew: "Stage") Hebrew theater company. Organized in Poland in 1912, it was reestablished in 1917 in Moscow, where it was encouraged by K. Stanislavsky. Habima's production of The Dybbuk (1922) established it as a company of high artistic merit, and it became affiliated with the Moscow Art Theatre. After producing The Golem (1925), the group toured Europe and the U.S. In 1931 most of the group moved to Tel Aviv, where they presented Yiddish and biblical dramas and a repertory of Israeli, classical, and contemporary foreign plays. In 1958 it became the National Theatre of Israel.


yakuza
Japanese gangsters. Yakuza, who trace their roots back to ronin, often adopt samurai-like rituals and identify themselves with elaborate body tattoos. They engage in such organized-crime pursuits as extortion, blackmail, smuggling, prostitution, drugs, and gambling, and they control many restaurants, bars, trucking companies, and taxi fleets in Japanese cities. Their numbers today exceed 150,000; they are organized into more than 2,000 gangs, most affiliated under the umbrella of one of a dozen or fewer conglomerate gangs. Yakuza gangs are rigidly hierarchical, and the price for disappointing the gang is often to be forced to cut off one's own finger.


Yama
In Indian mythology, the lord of death. The Vedas describe him as the first man who died. The son of the sun god Surya, he presides over the resting place of the dead. In the Vedas, he was a cheerful king of the departed ancestors, but in later mythology he became known as the just judge who punished the deceased for their sins.
