Laghouat
Town (pop., 1987: 67,000) and oasis, N central Algeria. At the S edge of the Atlas Mtns., it was built on two hills that are extensions of Mt. Tizigarine. It was settled in the 11th cent. and came under Moroccan and Turkish control. Seized by the French in 1852, it reverted to Algeria in 1962.
