Paterson
City (pop., 1996 est.: 150,000), NE New Jersey. It is located on the Passaic River, north of Newark, N.J. It was founded in 1791 as an industrial settlement by advocates of U.S. industrial independence from Europe. The successful enterprise, begun by A. Hamilton, was known as the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures. In the 19th cent. it was a center of cotton textile production, the silk industry, and locomotive manufacturing. It received a city charter in 1851 and was the scene of many labor disputes. By the 20th cent. its industries were widely diversified.
Sager
U.S. geneticist. Born in Chicago, she received her PhD from Columbia and later taught at Hunter College and Harvard Univ. Questioning the traditional belief that chromosomal genes are the only apparatus for transmitting genetic information to a cell, she discovered (1953) in the alga Chlamydomonas the existence of a second genetic-transmitting system, a gene not located on the alga's chromosomes that controls the cell's sensitivity to the antibiotic streptomycin, and observed that both male and female Chlamydomonas can transmit the nonchromosomal gene.
Yeager
U.S. test pilot. Born in Myra, W.V., he served as a pilot in World War II and became a flight instructor and test pilot after the war. Chosen to test-fly the secret experimental X-1 aircraft, in 1947 he became the first person to break the sound barrier in flight, with a speed of 670 mph (1,079 kph). A brash and colorful personality, he retired with the rank of brigadier general in 1975 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985.
