yacht
Sail- or motor-driven vessel used for racing or recreation. The term is popularly applied to large recreational engine-powered boats; the sailboats known as yachts and used for racing are usually light and comparatively small. Until the mid-19th cent., yachts were designed along the lines of naval craft such as schooners and cutters. Yacht design was greatly affected by the 1851 success of the America in the race that established the America's Cup. In the 20th cent., notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more common. See also sailing.
yaws
Contagious tropical disease, caused by spirochetes indistinguishable from those of syphilis, which may be a subspecies. Yaws spreads mainly by discharge from skin sores, not sexual activity. It is common in children, who usually become immune. In the first stage, a skin sore starts as a wartlike thickening, cracks open, leaks fluid, and bleeds easily. A month or more later, multiple sores erupt. The third stage (much rarer than in syphilis) involves destruction of skin, mucous membranes, and bones. Penicillin cures early-stage yaws. Prevention requires isolation and prompt treatment, and personal and group hygiene.
ass
Either of two species of small, sturdy equines. Asses are 3-5 ft (90-150 cm) high at the shoulder. The African wild ass, or true ass (Equus asinus) is bluish gray to fawn; the Asiatic wild ass, or half-ass (E. hemionus) is reddish to yellow-gray. The half-ass differs from the true ass in that it has extremely long, slender legs, shorter ears, and larger hooves. The true ass has the alternating "hee-haw" bray. Desert dwellers, wild asses often inhabit regions that cannot support other large mammals. They are very swift runners. See also donkey.
Bakst
Russian painter and stage designer. He attended the Imperial Academy of Arts at St. Petersburg and studied in Paris. In 1898 he cofounded the journal Mir Iskusstva ("World of Art") with S. Diaghilev. He began designing scenery for the imperial theaters in 1900. In Paris he designed sets and costumes for Diaghilev's new Ballets Russes. His bold designs and sumptuous colors, conveying an exotic orientalism, won him international fame. His work played a major role in the impact of the Ballet Russes, revolutionized European stage design, and strongly influenced European high fashion.
balsa
Tree (Ochroma pyramidale, or O. lagopus) of the bombax family (Bombacaceae), native to tropical S. America and noted for its extremely light wood, which resembles clear white pine or basswood. Because of its buoyancy (about twice that of cork), balsa is well adapted for making floats for lifelines and life preservers. Its resiliency makes it an excellent shock-absorbing packing material.
