Agassi
U.S. tennis player. Born in Las Vegas, he won the Wimbledon men's singles in 1992, the U.S. Open in 1994, and the Australian Open in 1995. By 1997 he had dropped to 122 in the international rankings, but he recovered to become the world's top-ranked player by 2000. He is known for his aggressive style and demeanor on and off the court.
Alaska
State (pop., 1997 est.: 609,000) of the U.S., lying at the extreme northwest of N. America. It is the largest in area of the U.S. states and covers 591,004 sq mi (1,530,700 sq km), most of it in land. Facing Siberia across the Bering Strait and Sea to the west, it has the highest point on the continent, Mt. McKinley. Its capital is Juneau. The original inhabitants, Indians and Eskimos, are thought to have migrated over the Bering Land Bridge as well as from the Arctic. The first European settlement was established in the late 18th cent. by Russian fur traders on Kodiak Island. Hudson's Bay Co. traders were also interested in the same area, and Russian-Canadian trade rivalry lasted well into the 19th cent. In 1867 W. Seward negotiated Alaska's sale from the Russians to the U.S., and the subsequent discovery of gold stimulated Amer. settlement. Alaska was a U.S. Territory from 1912 until it was admitted as the 49th state in 1959. Its economy has become increasingly centered on oil and natural gas: since the opening of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in 1977, Alaska has become second only to Texas in the U.S. production of crude oil.
Amado
Brazilian novelist. Born and reared on a cacao plantation, he published his first novel at 20. His early works, incl. The Violent Land (1942), explore the exploitation and suffering of plantation workers. Despite imprisonment and exile for leftist activities, he continued to produce novels, many of which have been banned in Brazil and Portugal. Later works such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958), Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966), and The War of the Saints (1993) preserve Amado's political attitude in their more subtle satire.
Amalfi
Town (pop., 1993 est.: 5,600), S Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. It was of little importance until the mid-6th cent., when it fell under Byzantine control. It grew into one of the first Italian maritime republics in the 9th cent., becoming a rival of Venice and Genoa. Annexed by Roger II of Sicily in 1131, it was sacked by Pisa in 1135 and 1137 and rapidly declined in importance, though its maritime code, the Tavola Amalfitano, was recognized in the Mediterranean until 1570. Amalfi is now a notable tourist resort.
