aerosol
System of tiny liquid or solid particles evenly distributed in a finely divided state through a gas, usually air. Aerosol particles participate in chemical processes and influence the electrical properties of the atmosphere. Though true aerosol particles range in diameter from a few millimicrometers to about 1 micrometer, the term is commonly used to refer to fog or cloud droplets and dust particles, which can have diameters of more than 100 micrometers. Bergson
French philosopher. His major books include Time and Free Will (1889), on the difference between the subjective and objective perception of time; Matter and Memory (1896), on the mind-body problem, taking a position opposed to scientific determinism; and Creative Evolution (1907), which argued that evolution, which he accepted as scientific fact, is not mechanistic but driven by é lan vital ("vital impulse"). He was the first to elaborate a process philosophy, rejecting static values and embracing dynamic values such as motion, change, and evolution. His writing style has been widely admired for its grace and lucidity, and he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927. Very popular in his time, he remains influential in France.


Caruso
Italian tenor. Born in Naples and apprenticed to a mechanical engineer at 10, at 18 he began to sing in public in his free time. He attracted the notice of a teacher, and made his professional debut in 1894. He sang his best-known role, Canio in R. Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, for the first time in 1896. He recovered from a disastrous La Scala debut in 1900 and within two years had gained the high notes that made him an international star and a legend. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera 1903-20 in almost 60 roles, becoming the most famous male opera star of his time. His warm, appealing tenor voice of great emotive power made his recordings (which include some of the first vocal recordings ever made) best-sellers for decades after his death at 48.


Ceres
Largest known asteroid in the solar system and the first discovered, in 1801. Named after the goddess Ceres, it revolves around the sun in 4.6 terrestrial years and is about 580 mi (930 km) across.

In Roman religion, the goddess of the growth of food plants, sometimes worshiped in association with the earth goddess Tellus. Her cult was overlaid by that of Demeter, who was worshiped in Greece and Sicily. According to tradition, her cult was introduced into Rome in 496 BC to check a famine. Her temple on Aventine Hill was known as a center of plebeian religious and political activities and for its artwork.
