Perahia
U.S.-British pianist. Born in New York City, he was trained at the Mannes College of Music. He won the Leeds International Piano Competition by unanimous vote in 1972, and in 1975 shared the first Avery Fisher Prize. From 1982 he was music director of the Aldeburgh Festival and made his home in England. He has recorded music from G. F. Handel to B. Bartó k, and is best known for his sensitive recordings of W. A. Mozart's concertos, conducted from the keyboard.


Persia
Historical name for the kingdom of Iran, SW Asia. It was used for centuries, chiefly in the West, and originated from a region of S Iran formerly known as Persis or Parsa. Parsa was the name of an Indo-European nomadic people who migrated into the area c.1000 BC; the use of the name was gradually extended by the ancient Greeks and other Western peoples to apply to the whole Iranian plateau. The people of Iran have always called their country Iran, and in 1935 the government requested that the name Iran be used instead of Persia.
