fantasia
Musical composition free in form and inspiration, often for an instrumental soloist. Most fantasias try to convey the impression of improvisation. The first were Italian works for lute (c.1530). Keyboard fantasias became common in the late 16th cent.; both organ and harpsichord fantasias flourished in the 17th-18th cent. in Britain, Germany, and France. Fugal, imitative texture, sometimes highly learned in character, was common from the beginning, often alternating with running passagework and highly chromatic chordal passages in free rhythms. Ensemble fantasias were widely composed as well. Important composers include J. P. Sweelinck, G. Frescobaldi, J. J. Froberger, H. Purcell, and J. S. Bach.
Sanusi
N. African Muslim theologian. He received his religious training in Fè s, Morocco, which was under strong French influence at the time. He became convinced that the Islamic community needed to revitalize itself in order to shake off foreign domination. Using tactics he had developed among Bedouins in the Hejaz, he organized tribes in Cyrenaica to resist Italian domination, founding a militant mystical movement, the Sanusiya (1837), that helped Libya win its independence in the 20th cent. Idris I was his grandson.
Xanthus
Ancient city, Lycia, Asia Minor. It was situated near the mouth of the Xanthus River. Its ruins (theater, temples, and tombs), from which a number of pieces were taken for the British Museum, are in SW Turkey. The ancient city was twice besieged and destroyed: in 540 BC by the Persians and in 42 BC by the Romans.
