lanthanide
Any of the series of 15 consecutive chemical elements in the periodic table from lanthanum to lutetium (atomic numbers 57-71). With scandium and yttrium, they make up the rare earth metals. Their atoms have similar configurations and similar physical and chemical behavior; the most usual valences are 3 and 4.
Xanthus
Ancient city, Lycia, Asia Minor. It was situated near the mouth of the Xanthus River. Its ruins (theater, temples, and tombs), from which a number of pieces were taken for the British Museum, are in SW Turkey. The ancient city was twice besieged and destroyed: in 540 BC by the Persians and in 42 BC by the Romans.
