aerosol
System of tiny liquid or solid particles evenly distributed in a finely divided state through a gas, usually air. Aerosol particles participate in chemical processes and influence the electrical properties of the atmosphere. Though true aerosol particles range in diameter from a few millimicrometers to about 1 micrometer, the term is commonly used to refer to fog or cloud droplets and dust particles, which can have diameters of more than 100 micrometers. Ariosto
Italian poet. His epic poem Orlando Furioso (1516; "Roland Mad") is regarded as the finest literary expression of the Italian Renaissance. It enjoyed immediate popularity throughout Europe and was highly influential. He also wrote five comedies based on Latin classics but inspired by contemporary life; though minor in themselves, they are among the first of the imitations of Latin comedy in the vernacular that would long characterize European comedy. He also composed seven satires modeled after those of Horace (1517-25).


BIOS
Computer program that is typically stored in EPROM and used by the CPU to perform start-up procedures when the computer is turned on. Its two major procedures are determining what peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, disk drives, printers, video cards, etc.) are available and loading the operating system (OS) into main memory. After start-up, the BIOS program manages data flow between the OS and the peripherals, so neither the OS nor the application programs need to know the details of the peripherals (such as hardware addresses).


Dirksen
U.S. politician. Born in Pekin, Ill., he served in World War I, then returned to Illinois to pursue business interests. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1932-48, where he voted against most New Deal measures and remained an isolationist until the U.S. entered World War II. He later served in the U.S. Senate (1950-69), becoming minority leader in 1959. He was noted for his oratorical style. Though a conservative, he helped secure passage of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act.


Eros
Greek god of love. Though Hesiod declared him one of the primeval gods born of Chaos, he was later said to be the son of Aphrodite. His Roman counterpart was Cupid. Eros was depicted as a beautiful winged youth carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. In later literature and art he became increasingly younger, ending as an infant. His cult center was at Thespiae, but he also shared a sanctuary with Aphrodite at Athens.


Gros
French painter. He was trained by his father, a painter of miniatures, and later by J.-L. David in Paris. In the 1790s he accompanied Napoleon I on his campaigns as his official battle painter.
