Possible definitions for winnows

Windows
Family of software products developed by Microsoft Corp., mainly for personal computers and workstations, that began as a graphical user interface and developed into an operating system. Version 1.0 (1985) provided a graphical user interface, multitasking, and virtual memory management; it ran on top of MS-DOS and was supported on Intel-based personal computers. Version 3.1 (1992) sold over 3 million copies in its first two months and helped establish Microsoft's dominance of the operating-system market for microcomputers. Windows 95 and Windows 98 (named for the years of their release) continued its success. Windows NT (1993), which can run on RISC-based computers as well as traditional Intel-based systems, is a high-end version of Windows intended for more powerful personal computers, workstations, and servers. Windows CE (1996) is an embedded operating system for palm PCs and other handheld devices. Windows 2000 is available in several versions for different types of computers, ranging from personal computers to high-end servers. Today Windows runs on more than 90% of all personal computers.

Minkowski
German physiologist and pathologist. While researching diabetes mellitus in 1884, he found that beta-hydroxybutyric acid and a decrease in blood bicarbonate cause diabetic acidosis (low blood pH); and that diabetic coma is accompanied by decreased blood carbon dioxide and can be treated by alkali therapy. Experiments on dogs with Joseph von Mering (1849-1908) led him to propose that the pancreas is the source of an "antidiabetic" substance, now known to be insulin. He also demonstrated that the liver produces bile pigments and uric acid.

minnow
Small fishes, especially of the carp family (Cyprinidae), as well as some rockfish (family Umbridae) and killifishes (family Cyprinodontidae). The numerous species of N. Amer. cyprinid minnows are freshwater fishes, 2.4-12 in. (6-30 cm) long. Many are valuable as food for fishes, birds, and other animals and as live bait. The bluntnose (Pimephales notatus) and fathead (P. promelas) minnows, the common shiner, and the Amer. roach are good bait species. The term also refers to the young of many large fish species. The minnow of Europe and N Asia (Phoxinus phoxinus) is about 3 in. (7.5 cm) long and varies from golden to green.

window
Opening in the wall of a building for light and air, and sometimes to frame a view. Since early times, the openings have been filled with stone, wooden, or iron grilles, with panes of glass, or with other translucent material such as mica or, in the Far East, paper. A window in a vertically sliding frame is called a sash window: a single-hung sash has only one half that moves; in a double-hung sash, both parts slide. A casement window swings open on hinges attached to the upright side of the frame. Awning windows swing outward on hinges attached to the top of the frame; hopper windows swing inward ...
