Ailly
French theologian and cardinal. D'Ailly worked to end the Western Schism. He advocated the doctrine of conciliarism (see Conciliar Movement). He was active at the Council of Pisa (1409), which deposed both pope and antipope in favor of the new conciliar pope, Alexander V, and at the Council of Constance (1414-18), which called for the abdication of John XXIII and the election of yet another pope (Martin V). His writings included a geographical treatise, Image of the World, used by C. Columbus.


Bailly
French astronomer and politician. Noted for his computation of an orbit for Halley's Comet (1759), he turned to politics with the outbreak of the French Revolution. He was chosen president of the Third Estate in May 1789 and was proclaimed the first mayor of Paris in July. He later lost popularity, particularly after his order to disperse a riotous crowd led to the massacre of the Champ de Mars (1791). He retired but was subsequently arrested, taken before the revolutionary tribunal, and guillotined.


holly
Any of approximately 400 species of red- or black-berried ornamental shrubs and trees that make up the genus Ilex (family Aquifoliaceae), incl. the popular Christmas hollies. English holly (I. aquifolium) bears shiny, spiny, dark, evergreen leaves; Amer. holly (I. opaca) has oblong, prickly leaves; both have usually red fruits. There are spineless and yellow-fruited forms of both species.


Killy
French skier. Born in Saint-Cloud, he was reared in an Alpine ski resort. He became the European champion in 1965, and in 1966 he won the world-combined championship (downhill, slalom, and giant slalom). In 1967 he won the first World Cup for men, repeating this triumph in 1968. In the 1968 Winter Olympics he became the second skier in history to sweep the Alpine events (after Austria's Toni Sailer in 1956). He retired in 1968 but returned as a professional in 1972.


Scilly
Group of about 50 small islands and many more islets, off Land's End, SW England. Totaling about 6 sq mi (16 sq km), the islands are a continuation of the granite masses of the Cornish mainland. During the English Civil Wars, Prince Charles sheltered there until his escape to Jersey in 1646. The islands were a haunt of pirates and notorious for smuggling activities. They are administratively part of the county of Cornwall.


Shillong
City (pop., 1991: 132,000), NE India. It has been an administrative center since 1864, first as a district headquarters, later as the capital of Assam, and, since 1972, as the capital of Meghalaya state. It was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in 1897. It is a resort area and an important agricultural trade center.
