Wellington
City (pop., 1996 est.: 158,000), port, and capital of New Zealand. It is located in S North Island, on Port Nicholson. Founded in 1840, it became a municipality in 1853. In 1865 the capital was transferred there from Auckland. It is the financial, commercial, and transportation center of New Zealand. Wellington produces transportation equipment, machinery, metal products, textiles, and printed materials. It is the site of the major government buildings and the headquarters of many cultural, scientific, and agricultural organizations.
Billings
City (pop., 1996 est.: 91,000), S central Montana. Billings was established on the Yellowstone River in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway and named for its president. It is now a trading and shipping point for wool, livestock, and agriculture. Nearby Pictograph Cave State Monument has prehistoric artifacts.
welding
Technique for joining metallic parts, usually through the application of heat. Discovered in the 1st millennium AD during attempts to manipulate iron into useful shapes, the technique produced a strong, tough blade. Welding traditionally involved interlayering relatively soft and tough iron with high-carbon material, followed by hammer forging. Modern welding processes include gas welding, arc welding, and resistance welding. More recently, electron-beam welding, laser welding, and several solid-phase processes such as diffusion bonding, friction welding, and ultrasonic joining have been developed.
