Welles
U.S. politician. Born in Glastonbury, Conn., he cofounded and edited the Hartford Times (1826-36). In 1856 he founded one of the first Republican Party newspapers in New England, the Hartford Evening Press. In 1861 he was appointed secretary of the navy by Pres. A. Lincoln, and in the Civil War he built a large Union navy from a few ships, supported development of the ironclads, and helped form the strategic naval blockade. His Diary of Gideon Welles (published 1911), gives valuable insights into the Civil War.
Weelkes
British composer and organist. He published his first book of madrigals in 1597, and was appointed organist at Winchester College the following year. His next two books of madrigals, his greatest, were soon published (1598, 1600), and a final volume in 1608. His settings are often marked by strong chromaticism for expressive purposes.
