Bremen
City (pop., 1996 est.: 549,000), NW Germany. Located on the Weser River, it was established as a diocese in 787 by Charlemagne, and was the seat of an archbishopric from 845. In the 10th cent. it became an economic center of N Germany, especially after entering the Hanseatic League in 1358. It joined the German Confederation in 1815 and the reconstituted German empire in 1871. It suffered extensive damage in World War II; after the war Bremen, with nearby Bremerhaven (pop., 1992 est.: 131,000), became a state of W. Germany. Today the state forms an integral part of the German economy and serves as headquarters for many industries.

Former duchy, Germany. Lying between the lower Weser and lower Elbe rivers and northwest of the former duchy of Brunswick-Lü neburg, it covered an area of about 2,000 sq mi (5,200 sq km). It was made an archbishopric in the 13th cent., and in 1648 became a duchy under the supremacy of Sweden. In 1715 it became part of the electorate of Hannover.


Clemente
U.S. baseball player. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he played in the minor leagues in Puerto Rico before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955. He led the National League in hitting in 1961, 1964, 1965, and 1967, and batted .362 in two World Series (1960, 1970). He was also known for his fielding, throwing, and base-stealing. His career was cut short when he died in the crash of an airplane loaded with relief supplies he had collected for Nicaraguan earthquake victims.


Diemen
Dutch colonial administrator who consolidated the Dutch empire in the Far East. He joined the Dutch E. India Co. and served in Batavia from 1618. As governor-general of the Dutch E. Indian settlements (1636-45), he enabled the Dutch to gain a monopoly of the spice trade in the Moluccas, conquer cinnamon-producing areas in Ceylon (later Sri Lanka), seize the key Portuguese stronghold of Malacca, and capture all of Formosa (Taiwan). By 1645 he had established the United Provinces of the Netherlands as the paramount commercial and political power in the E. Indies. Van Diemen also initiated the exploring expeditions of A. Tasman and Frans Visscher (1642, 1644).

Whitish viscous fluid emitted from the male reproductive tract that contains sperm and liquids (seminal plasma) that help keep them viable. Sperm cells, produced by the testes in humans, represent 2-5% of semen volume; fluids from tubules, glands, and storage areas of the reproductive system bathe them as they travel down, nourishing them, keeping them motile, or participating in certain chemical reactions. During ejaculation, liquids from the prostate gland and seminal vesicles dilute the sperm and provide a suitable, slightly alkaline environment. An average ejaculation of a human male expels 0.1-0.3 cu inches (2-5 ml), containing 200-300 million sperm.
