hare
Bounding mammal (in the family Leporidae) whose young, unlike those of rabbits, are born fully haired, with open eyes, and sufficiently advanced to hop about a few minutes after birth. The common hare (Lepus europaeus) is native to central and S Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; introduced into Australia, it has become a pest there. In N. America the jackrabbit and snowshoe hare are widespread. Many other species occur naturally on all principal landmasses except Australia. Hares have well-developed hind legs, and the ears are usually longer than the head. Species vary in length from 16 to 28 in. (40-70 cm), without the short tail. Hares in N latitudes are white in winter and grayish brown in summer; elsewhere, they are usually grayish brown year-round. Hares are primarily herbivorous.

harem
In Muslim countries, that part of a house set apart for the women of the family or from which nonfamily males are excluded. Harems existed in the pre-Islamic civilizations of the Middle East; in the courts of pre-Islamic Assyria, Persia, and Egypt, they were often the sites of political intrigues involving rival court factions. Large harems for wives and concubines were common in wealthy Arab households into the 20th cent.; the great harem of the Turkish sultans (15th-20th cent.) contained several hundred women, guarded by eunuchs. By the later 20th cent., the full harem system existed only among conservative elements of Arab society. The harem also existed in the courts of China and Japan as well as in India and S.E. Asia.

Karen
Variety of tribal peoples of S Myanmar. The Karen are not a unitary group in any ethnic sense, differing linguistically, religiously, and economically. Rather, they have defined themselves in terms of their common distrust of political domination by Myanmar (in which they are the second-largest minority), which has persisted since the country attained independence in 1948.

Lares
In Roman religion, guardian deities. Originally gods of cultivated fields, Lares were later worshiped in association with the Penates, the gods of the household. The household Lar, considered the center of the family cult, was often represented as a youthful figure holding a drinking horn and cup. Two Lares might be portrayed standing on either side of Vesta or some other deity. A prayer was said to the Lar or Lares every morning, and offerings were made at family festivals. Public Lares presided over local districts marked by a crossroad; state Lares (praestites), guardians of Rome, were worshiped in a temple on the Via Sacra.

mare
Any flat, low, dark plain on the moon. Maria are huge lava flows marked by ridges, depressions (graben), and faults; though mare means "sea" in Latin, they lack water. The best known is probably Mare Tranquillitatis ("Sea of Tranquility"), the site of the Apollo 11 moon landing. All 14 maria are on the side of the moon that ...
