Gansu
Province (pop., 1996 est.: 24,380,000), N central China. For several centuries a passage between the Upper Huang River region and W China, it became part of Chinese territory in the 3rd cent. BC. It was renowned as the entranceway into China used by M. Polo. E Gansu is the main site of earthquakes in China; in 1920 an earthquake there destroyed many towns and caused 200,000 deaths. Gansu's capital in Lanzhou. Wheat is the province's chief crop, and wheat flour rather than rice is the basis of the local diet.


pansy
Any of several popular cultivated violets (genus Viola). Pansies have been grown for so long under such diverse conditions with such striking variations in color and form that their origin is uncertain. Probably the garden pansy (V. wittrockiana) is a cultivated form of V. tricolor, a weed of European grainfields. Annuals or short-lived perennials, pansies grow 6-12 in. (15-30 cm) tall and have heart-shaped leaves at the base and oblong leaves growing from the stems. Velvety flowers occur in combinations of blue, yellow, and white. The smaller, usually purple, wild pansy is also known as Johnny-jump-up, heartsease, and love-in-idleness.

Any of about 50 species of strong-smelling, poisonous herbs, especially common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare, or Chrysanthemum vulgare), of the composite family, native to the N temperate zone.T. vulgare has button-shaped yellow flower heads of disk flowers (no ray flowers) that are arranged in a flat-topped cluster, deeply cut leaves, and many stems. It is sometimes cultivated in herb gardens and was formerly used in medicines and insecticides. See also chrysanthemum.


Anshan
City (pop., 1990: 1,204,000), Liaoning province, NE China. Established as a post station in 1387, it was fortified in 1587 as part of the defenses set up by the Ming dynasty against the rising power of the Manchus. It was destroyed by fire during the Boxer Rebellion and badly damaged during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5). In the 1930s the Japanese occupied Anshan and made it a steelmaking center. The city was bombed by U.S. aircraft in 1944 and looted by the Soviets following World War II. The Chinese later redeveloped it into an industrial center that produces steel, cement, and chemicals.

City and territory of ancient Elam, north of modern Shiraz, Iran. Anshan came to prominence c.2350 BC, but its greatest period was in the 13th-12th cent. BC, when, as kings of Anshan and Susa, Elamite rulers periodically raided the cities of Babylonia. The area apparently came under the control of Persia c.675 BC. Its ruins have yielded major finds, incl. examples of early Elamite writing.
