adder
Any of several venomous snakes of the viper family (Viperidae) and the death adder, a viperlike elapid. Vipers include the common adder, puff adders, and night adders. Adders occur in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. They range in length from 18 in. to 5 ft (45 cm-1.5 m). The puff adder of Africa and the death adder of Australia and the nearby islands are particularly venomous, with a bite often lethal to humans. The name is also used for other snakes (e.g., the hognose snake).


alder
Any of about 30 species of ornamental shrubs and trees in the genus Alnus, of the birch family, found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and W S. America on cool, wet sites. Alders are distinguished from birches by their usually stalked winter buds and by cones that remain on the branches after the small, winged nutlets are released. Alders have scaly bark, oval leaves that fall without changing color, and separate male and female flowers (catkins) borne on the same tree. Some familiar N. Amer. alders are the red alder (A. rubra or A. oregona); the white, or Sierra, alder (A. rhombifolia); and the speckled alder (A. rugosa). Alder wood is fine-textured and durable, even under water; it is useful for furniture, cabinetry, lathe work, and in charcoal manufacture and millwork. Alders' spreading root systems and tolerance of moist soils lend them to planting on stream banks for flood and erosion control.


badger
Any of eight species of stout-bodied carnivores (family Mustelidae) that possess an anal scent gland, powerful jaws, and large, heavy claws on their forefeet. Most species are brown, black, or gray, with markings on the face or body, and are found in SE Asia. Badgers dig to find food and to construct burrows and escape routes. The Amer. badger (Taxidea taxus), the only New World species, lives in the open, dry country of W N. America. Badgers feed mostly on small animals, especially rodents. Species may be 9-12 in. (23-30 cm) high and 13-32 in. (33-81 cm) long, excluding the 2- to 10-in. (5- to 23-cm) tail, and may weigh 2-48 lbs (1-22 kg). Badgers can be savage fighters.


Balder
In Norse mythology, the just and beautiful son of Odin and Frigga. He could be harmed by nothing except mistletoe. Knowing he was invulnerable, the gods amused themselves by throwing things at him. Deceived by Loki, the blind god H\u00f6 d hurled mistletoe at Balder and killed him. The giantess Th\u00f6 kk, probably Loki in disguise, refused to weep the tears that would have released Balder from the underworld.
