Falasha
Jewish Ethiopians. The Falasha call themselves House of Israel and claim descent from Menilek I, son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Probably descended from local Agew peoples converted by Jews in S Arabia, they remained faithful to Judaism after the Ethiopian kingdom was converted to Christianity in the 4th cent. AD. Persecuted by Christians, they settled in the area around Lake Tana in N Ethiopia. Though ignorant of the Talmud, members adhered strictly to the Mosaic law and observed some festivals of Judaism. In 1975 the Israeli rabbinate affirmed that Falashas were Jews, and from 1980 to 1992 some 45,000 Falasha emigrated to Israel, leaving probably only a few thousand in Ethiopia.


Lagash
Ancient capital in Sumer. It was located midway between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Babylonia, now modern SE Iraq. Excavations have uncovered palace and temple ruins as well as cuneiform texts that provide knowledge of Sumer in the 3rd millennium BC. Founded in the Ubaid Period (c.5200-c.3500 BC), it came under the control of Sargon of Akkad. It later prospered under Gudea, a governor nominally subject to the Guti. It was occupied as late as the Parthian era (247 BC-AD 224).


Lamashtu
In Mesopotamian religion, the most terrible of all female demons. The daughter of the sky god Anu, Lamashtu killed children, consumed human flesh and blood, blighted plants, spoiled rivers and streams, sent nightmares, caused miscarriages, and brought disease. She had seven names and was often described in incantations as "seven witches." She was portrayed on amulets as a lion- or bird-headed female figure kneeling on an ass, holding a double-headed serpent in each hand and suckling dogs or pigs at her breasts.


Tabasco
State (pop., 1995 est.: 1,747,000), SE Mexico. It covers an area of 9,522 sq mi (24,662 sq km); its capital is Villahermosa. Pre-Columbian Indian cultures included those of the Quich\u00e9 , Olmec, Tabasca, and Nahua. The area was first visited by Europeans in 1518; in 1519 H. Cort\u00e9 s first clashed with the Indians, who were partially subdued in the 1530s and 1540s. It became a state in 1824. Agriculture, forestry, beekeeping, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and cattle-raising provided much of the state's income before petroleum exploitation began in the 1960s. The state now has over 30 oil fields.


Walachia
Former principality, S central Europe, between the Danube River and Transylvania Alps, Romania. It was founded in 1290 by Radu Negru, a vassal of Hungary, and achieved independence from Hungary in 1330. Its capital in the 14th-17th cent. was Targoviste. Walachia was under the Turks in the 15th cent., though some princes resisted, notably Vlad Dracul (1436-47) and Vlad III Tepes, who are often cited as the historical basis for the Dracula vampire tales.
