Adapa
Legendary sage of the Sumerian city of Eridu. Endowed with great intelligence by Ea but still mortal, he was the hero of the Sumerian myth of the Fall of Man. Adapa was fishing when he was blown into the sea by the S wind, whose wings he broke in rage. The heavenly doorkeepers Tammuz and Ningishzida interceded for him when he was summoned before Anu for punishment, but when Anu offered him the bread and water of eternal life, he refused, and humankind thus became mortal.


Arapaho
Plains Indian people of Algonquian language stock who lived along the Platte and Arkansas rivers in the 19th cent. Like other Plains groups, the Arapaho were nomadic, living in tepees and depending on the buffalo for subsistence. They were highly religious and practiced the sun dance. Their social organization included age-graded military societies as well as men's shamanistic societies. They traded with the Mandan and Arikara and were often at war with the Shoshone, Ute, and Pawnee. A S branch was long allied with the Cheyenne and fought with them against Col. G. A. Custer at Little Bighorn in 1876. Today about 2,000 Arapaho live in Wyoming and another 3,000 Arapaho-Cheyenne in Oklahoma.


Chapala
Lake, Jalisco state, Mexico. Mexico's largest lake, it is 50 mi (81 km) long and has an area of 651 sq mi (1,686 sq km). A popular resort area, it is traversed by the R\u00ed o Santiago, which enters the lake as the R\u00ed o Lerma.


Kaaba
Most sacred Muslim shrine, located near the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca. All Muslims face toward it in their daily prayers. The cube-shaped structure, made of gray stone and marble, has its corners roughly oriented to the points of the compass; the interior contains only pillars and silver and gold lamps. Pilgrims to Mecca walk around the Kaaba seven times and touch the Black Stone of Mecca on its E side, which may date from the pre-Islamic religion of the Arabs. Tradition holds that the Kaaba was built by Abraham and Ishmael. In 630 Muhammad purged the place of its pagan idols and rededicated it to Islam.


Kampala
City (pop., 1991: 774,000), capital of Uganda. The country's largest city, it is in S Uganda, north of Lake Victoria. It was selected in 1890 by Capt. Frederick Lugard as the headquarters of the British E. Africa Co. Lugard's fort on Old Kampala Hill remained the Ugandan colonial administrative headquarters until 1905, when it was moved to Entebbe. In 1962 Kampala became the capital of independent Uganda. It is the headquarters for most of Uganda's large firms and the site of Makerere Univ. and the Uganda Museum.
