Maat
In ancient Egyptian religion, the personification of truth, justice, and the cosmic order. Maat was the daughter of Re, the sun god, and she stood at the head of his bark as it traveled through the sky and the underworld. She was also associated with Thoth, god of wisdom. The judgment of the dead was believed to be determined by the weighing of the heart of the deceased in a scale she balanced. In its abstract sense, maat was the divine order established at creation and reaffirmed at the accession of each new king of Egypt.
Sadat
President of Egypt (1970-81). A graduate of the Cairo Military Academy, he joined G. A. Nasser's conspiracy to depose the monarchy in 1950, and later served as vice president (1964-66, 1969-70). He became president when Nasser died in 1970. In 1973 he joined with Syria in a surprise attack on Israel, losing militarily but gaining politically. In 1977 he went to Jerusalem to offer peace to Israel, and in 1979 he concluded a peace treaty with M. Begin. The two men shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. At home, faced with a worsening economy, Sadat suppressed public dissent. His assassination by K. al-Islambuli, a Muslim extremist, elicited shock and grief worldwide. Wadai
Historical African kingdom, central Africa. Located east of Lake Chad and west of Darfur, it was founded in the 16th cent. A Muslim dynasty was established there c.1630, and though long subordinate to Darfur, it became independent by the 1790s and began a period of rapid expansion. It came under French influence in 1899 and French control 1912-14. The area is now largely in E Chad.
Waldeck
Former state, Germany. Now a part of Hesse, its capital was Arolsen. A county in the Middle Ages, it became a principality in 1712 and part of Prussia in 1867. A republic and constituent state of the Weimar Republic 1918-29, it later formed part of the Prussian Hesse-Nassau province until 1945.
wapiti
Species (Cervus canadensis) of N. Amer. deer, often considered the same species as the red deer. Once common, the wapiti is now confined to the Rocky Mtns. and S Canada. It is the second-largest living deer species (the moose is first). Males may stand taller than 5 ft (1.5 m) at the shoulder and weigh up to 1,100 lbs (500 kg). The coat is brown, pale on the rump, and long and shaggy on the shoulders and neck. The male's five-tined antlers tower almost 4 ft (1.2 m) above his head. Wapiti live in large bands in winter and in small groups in summer. See also elk.
