Ionia
Ancient region, W coast of Asia Minor (modern Turkey) bordering on the Aegean Sea. It consisted of a coastal strip that extended from the mouth of the Hermus River to the Halicarnassus Peninsula, a distance of 100 mi (160 km). In the 8th cent. BC there were 12 major Greek cities in the region, incl. Phocaea, Erythrae, Colophon, and Miletus on the mainland, and the islands Chios and Samos. It was very prosperous, and until 500 BC Ionic philosophy and architecture and the Ionic dialect were highly influential in Greece. In the mid-6th cent. BC, it fell to Lydia and then to the Persians. After a brief period of independence beginning 334 BC, it became part of the Seleucid kingdom. In 133 BC it passed to the Romans and became part of the Roman province of Asia. It was devastated during the Turkish conquest of Asia Minor.
Livonia
Region, E coast of Baltic Sea, north of Lithuania. Originally inhabited by the Livs, a Finno-Ugric people, it eventually expanded to include nearly all of modern Latvia and Estonia. In the 13th cent. it was conquered and Christianized by the Order of the Brothers of the Sword and organized into the Livonian confederation. A Russian invasion set off the Livonian War (1558-82), in which Russia, Poland, and Sweden seized portions of it. Sweden eventually gained control of most of it but ceded the region to Russia in 1721. In 1918 the N portion became part of independent Estonia and the S portion joined independent Latvia.
Vitoria
City (pop., 1995 est.: 215,000), capital of Basque Country autonomous community, NE Spain. Founded as Victoriacum by the Visigothic king Leovigild in 581, it was granted a charter in the 12th cent. In 1200 Alfonso VIII captured it and incorporated it into his kingdom. In 1813 it was the scene of a battle in which allied forces under English Gen. Arthur Wellesley (later duke of Wellington) defeated the French, driving them from Spain and leading to the end of the Peninsular War. A rapidly growing manufacturing center, it retains several medieval buildings.
