Berain
French decorator and designer. Trained under C. Le Brun, he was appointed chief designer to the court of Louis XIV in 1674. He was skilled in designing tapestries, accessories, furniture, costumes, and elaborate stage settings for operas and extravagant theatrical productions, filled with fantastic iconography. He satisfied the king's appetite for splendor and inspired such other cabinetmakers as A.-C. Boulle.
Berar
Historical region, central India. Located north of Hyderabad, Berar emerged as a distinct political entity after the incursions of Muslim armies in the 13th cent. AD. It formed part of several Muslim kingdoms until, on the breakup of the Mughal empire, it fell to the ruler of Hyderabad. Coming under British control in 1853, it was subsequently assigned to various provinces; it has been part of Maharashtra state since 1960. The region includes a rich cotton-growing area in the Purna River basin.
Ceram
Island of the central Moluccas, Indonesia. It has an area of 6,621 sq mi (17,148 sq km). The terrain is mountainous and covered with tropical forests; seismic activity is common. Portuguese missionaries arriving in the 15th cent. found Hindu and Islamic influences present; it came under nominal Dutch control c.1650. During World War II the Japanese occupied it; after the war it became part of Indonesia.
era
Very long span of geologic time; in formal usage, a portion of geologic time of the second-greatest magnitude (eons are longer). Three eras are recognized: Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Because of the difficulties involved in establishing accurate chronologies, the Precambrian, or earliest, eras are classified independently. An era is composed of one or more geologic periods.
Hera
Greek queen of the gods and sister-wife of Zeus. Her Roman counterpart was Juno. She was worshiped as queen of heaven and patron of marriage and women. She also held the title Eileithyia, the goddess of birth. She was the patron deity of Samos and Argos, which held celebrations and processions in her honor. Her sacred animal was the cow. In literature she was depicted as a jealous wife who vindictively pursued the women Zeus seduced.
Terai
Region of N India and S Nepal. It runs parallel to the lower Himalayan ranges and stretches from the Yamuna River to the Brahmaputra River. Numerous springs at its N edge form several streams, incl. the Ghaghara River, that intersect the region and give it its marshy character. Much of the area's marshland, once malarial, has been drained and put under cultivation.
Veda
Any of a group of sacred hymns and verses composed in archaic Sanskrit, probably in the period 1500-1200 BC. Together they form a body of liturgical literature that grew up around the cult of the soma ritual. They extol the hereditary deities that personified various natural and cosmic phenomena.
