CASE
Use of computers in designing sophisticated tools to aid the software engineer and to automate the software development process as much as possible. It is particularly useful where major software products are designed by teams of engineers who may not share the same physical space. CASE tools can be used for simple operations such as routine coding from an appropriately detailed design in a specific programming language, or for more complex tasks such as incorporating an expert system to enforce design rules and eliminate software defects and redundancies before the coding phase.

academy
Society of learned individuals organized to advance art, science, literature, music, or some other cultural or intellectual area of endeavor. The word comes from the name of an olive grove outside ancient Athens, the site of Plato's famous school of philosophy in the 4th cent. BC. Academies appeared in Italy in the 15th cent. and reached their greatest influence in the 17th-18th cent. Most European countries now have at least one academy sponsored or otherwise connected with the state. See also Acad\u00e9 mie Fran\u00e7 aise.

base
In chemistry, any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the color of acid-base indicators (e.g., litmus paper), reacts with acids to form salts, and promotes certain chemical reactions (e.g., base catalysis). Examples of bases are the hydroxides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (sodium, calcium, etc.) and the water solutions of ammonia or its derivatives (amines). Such substances produce hydroxide ions (OH-) in water solutions. Broader definitions of bases cover situations in which water is not present. See also acid-base theory, alkali, nucleophile.

Hollow or pithy and usually slender and flexible jointed stem (as of a reed). Also, any of various slender woody stems, especially an elongated flowering or fruiting stem (as of a rose) usually arising directly from the ground. The term is also applied to any of various tall woody grasses or reeds, incl. the coarse grasses of the genus Arundinaria (see bamboo), sugarcane, and sorghum.

cashew
Edible seed or nut of Anacardium occidentale, a tropical and subtropical evergreen shrub or tree in the sumac family, native to tropical Central and S. America. Important chiefly for its nuts, the tree also produces wood used for shipping crates, boats, and charcoal, and a gum similar to gum arabic. Related to poison ivy and poison sumac, it must be handled with care. The two-shelled nut is shaped like a large, thick bean. A brown oil between the two shells blisters human skin and is used as a lubricant and an insecticide and in the production of plastics. The nut is rich and distinctively flavored.
